Lithuania is the largest and southternmost of the three Baltic countries.
It was a powerful empire that dominated much of eastern Europe in the 14th–16th centuries before becoming part of the Polish-Lithuanian Lithuanian Commonwealth, that lasted over two centuries.
The country has a high-income economy. The largest industry sectors are: oil refinement, electronics, technology, manufacturing and traditional agriculture.
Lithuanian banking sector is relatively small, highly concentrated, with high share of foreign capital and is dominated by Scandinavian banks, all supervised directly by the European Central Bank jointly with bank of Lithuania experts. The banks are providing a wide range of retails services, financial services, leasing and insurance services.
Based on the latest World Bank annual ratings, Lithuania is ranked 16 out of 190 countries in the ease of doing business. And according to the Global Competitiveness Report 2017-2018 of the World Economic Forum, Lithuania is the 41 most competitive country in the world out of 137 countries.
